Moon water is an awesome ingredient that can boost almost anything you want to do. And it’s so simple to make because you can use things from around the house and leave it alone while you sleep. It’s an easy way to harness the power of the moon. Let’s dive right in to the magick of moon water.
What is moon water?
Luckily, like most other witchy things, moon water is quite literally named. As you’ve rightly assumed, moon water is water that’s been left out under moonlight and not touched by the sun.
How do you make moon water?
Remember when I raved about how easy it is to make moon water? You only need to provide two things to make moon water:
- Water (tap, bottled, river, whatever you have on hand)
- A clear jar or container (opaque jars don’t work because the water is protected from the moonlight)
Once you’ve collected those two things, put the water in the jar after the sun’s gone down. Leave it to rest under the moonlight (either indoors, through a window or outdoors). I try to leave my moon water out for as long as I can, but even a few hours under moonlight can charge your water.
Make sure to collect your water before the sun comes up. Dawn, when the sun’s rays are barely peeking over the horizon, is fine. Just be sure to get it before it sits in direct sunlight! I like to bottle my moon water in dark jars to preserve it whenever possible.
What is moon water used for?
Another reason I love moon water is because of its versatility. It’s such a pure and mild (yet powerful) ingredient that can be used for most anything. Seriously, from charging to potions to spell work, moon water is one of my go-to ingredients!
The purpose of moon water is to infuse some of the moon’s power into water. Having the power of the moon as a physical substance that can be used at any time definitely has its benefits. Moon water has the same properties as the moon.
Moon water FAQs
While I’ve covered the basics of moon water, if you’re an over thinker like I am, you probably still have a few questions. I’ve tried to include a lot of common questions about moon water, as well as some more specific questions that I had when starting out.
What if it’s cloudy? What if I live somewhere that doesn’t get direct moonlight?
Don’t worry! Whether you see the moon or not, it’s still there. And it still has power. If your moon water doesn’t get direct moonlight, it’s still moon water. However, it may be a bit weaker, so you should try to leave it out as long as possible or even out for a few nights.
Do the moon’s phases affect the properties of moon water?
Yes, the moon’s phases do influence your moon water. No mater what phase you’re under, your moon water will still have the general properties attributed to the moon.
However, you can create specific types of moon water (I do!) that complement the specific work you want to accomplish. As a warning, don’t get obsessive over this. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember the phase of the moon when you made your moon water. And who cares if you use full moon moon water for a spell that would’ve better used waning crescent moon water.
Is my moon water ruined if the sun touches it?
There are a few different opinions on this within the witch community. Some believe that you’ll have sun water now. Some believe that it’s still moon water. Others believe it’s now sun-moon water.
I personally believe that once the sun touches your water, you now have sun water. (Albeit weak sun water, considering that it probably didn’t stay in the sun for very long.) I believe that water is a change element and therefore takes on new properties all the time. And it needs to be, because there’s no way that the water you’re using to make moon water has never seen the sun before.
Does that mean you can’t have combination moon waters?
I know some witches like to use “special” waters to make moon water. I don’t mean specially sourced water, but rather other waters that are already saturated with magickal properties. Things like storm water, snow water, rain water, etc.
I do believe that you can have snow-moon water (or any of the above combinations) and create a water that has the properties of both. Linking this answer with my answer above, the moon isn’t the “opposite” of any of those waters above. If you think of it as a compass, with the sun as North and the moon as South (these aren’t the correct correspondences but hear me out!) and rain as West and snow as East, for example. You can have a Northeast and Northwest, or a Southeast and Southwest. But having a Northsouth or Southnorth is impossible… In the same way I believe that sun-moon water is impossible.
Can I drink moon water? What would the benefits be?
It depends if the water that you used initially was potable. If you would drink it before it was moon water, you’re fine to drink it after. I would caution against water that’s been left outside overnight without a cover, though.
As for its benefits, you would be giving yourself a boost of the same attributes associated with the moon. It’s the same concept as the people who drink water with crystals inside! Speaking of…
Can I put crystals or other things in my moon water?
I’m always on the fence about this, not for spiritual reasons but for safety reasons! Some crystals, like my favorite amazonite, are toxic due to presence of heavy metals and the like. If you’ve done your research and know for certain that your crystals are safe, then you know best.
On the other hand, some crystals, like fluorite, just react badly to water and don’t hold up. You don’t want your crystals to crack or dissolve due to negligence! And some crystals may even rust if left exposed to water for too long.
Same thing goes for herbs and other plants. Do your research before putting anything in your water that could potentially harm you.
I hope this post answered all of your questions about making moon water! If there’s anything that I didn’t cover then please leave me a comment below and I’d be happy to add it to this list.
