You’re Probably Cleansing Your Tarot Cards Too Often

Frequent cleansing isn’t always the answer.

Have you ever felt the need to cleanse your tarot deck every time your readings start to feel a bit off? It’s a common practice, almost a ritual, among tarot enthusiasts. But what if I told you that this might not always be necessary?

Just like a well-loved cast iron skillet that gets better with use, your tarot deck can benefit from a bit of “seasoning.” Instead of reaching for the sage or crystals to cleanse your deck at the first sign of trouble, consider this: maybe your tarot cards are just fine the way they are.

The Myth of Necessary Cleansing

Many of us in the tarot community have been taught to cleanse our decks regularly as a way to clear out negative energies or to reset the deck’s vibration. But I challenge this routine practice.

Think about it—the more you use your deck, the more it aligns with your personal energy. This ‘seasoning’ can actually enhance your readings, making them more accurate and connected to your intuition. From personal experience, I’ve found that my readings have depth and nuance when I let my deck evolve with me over time, without stripping away its gained wisdom through frequent cleansings.

There’s something to be said for letting your tarot deck retain its energies. Just as we value the patina on a well-used piece of furniture or the well-worn feel of a favorite book, a tarot deck that carries your personal imprint can serve you better.

It’s about embracing and valuing the personal and unique connection that forms through consistent use. In my own practice, accepting the quirks of my decks has not only made my readings more interesting but also more insightful. It’s about learning to work with what you have, rather than seeking perfection.

When to Actually Cleanse a Tarot Deck

Of course, there are times when a tarot deck might indeed benefit from a cleanse. If a deck has been through an emotionally intense reading or has been handled by many different people, it might pick up some heavy energy.

Also, if you’ve just acquired a previously used deck, cleansing can serve as a sort of reset, helping to tailor its energies to align with yours. In these cases, cleansing can be beneficial and help you start on the right foot. Yet, these are exceptions, not the rule. The last time I felt the need to cleanse a deck was several years ago, and it was under very specific circumstances.

Alternative Troubleshooting Tips

Before you rush to cleanse your tarot deck, consider other methods to improve your readings. Familiarity with your deck’s symbolism is crucial. Spend time studying the imagery and the meanings behind each card. This not only enhances your connection with the deck but also deepens your interpretations.

Another approach is to change up your reading environment. A calm, inviting space can significantly affect the energy of your readings. Sometimes, simply shuffling your deck in a different way or at a different pace can make all the difference. These methods focus on building a bond with your deck, rather than resetting it completely.

While cleansing your tarot deck can be a useful practice in certain situations, it is not always necessary…. and a lot of beginners cleanse way too often. A tarot deck becomes more effective with use.

By embracing the unique characteristics your deck naturally acquires, you can enhance the depth and accuracy of your readings. So next time you encounter a hiccup in your tarot practice, consider whether your deck really needs a cleanse, or if there’s another issue at play instead.
